Experience

Head of Design — Stealth Startup — 2018-Current
Creating a user experience architecture for fully self-driving vehicle caravans over longer distances. Making things safer, use less energy, and ease gridlock. Scope: freight and personal vehicles, both ad-hoc and scheduled.

User Experience Architect (Contract) — Amazon — 2017-2018
Under NDA with the Devices executive design team… I might be able to talk about it someday.

2016-2017 — Sabbatical
A wonderful break to recharge and enjoy life, the kids, and the Pacific NW.

Global Director Experience Design — Cisco — 2012-2016
Created a global experience design team to focus on the company’s software and hardware portfolio. I created the experience vision to unify the fragmented user experience our customers endured. Using Design Thinking and developing new methods of user research, I inspired and aligned engineering, product management and executive leadership to unify the experience of dozens of software and hardware products. I oversaw the UX and design of: software, websites, hardware, events, buildings, design languages, and brand identity. I touched almost everything Cisco shipped to customers. When I started, Cisco’s customer experience was messy; when I finished it was much simpler for our customers and fantastic for our business. The awards were nice too.

Director, Innovation + Experience Design — Cisco  — 2010-2012
Using a lens of the employee experience I increased productivity, information sharing between teams, and collaboration. I created the experience models and led the initial design teams for Cisco’s enterprise social software platform, WebEx Social. My program portfolio collectively saved the company $1.1B and increased overall employee satisfaction by 14%.

Senior Manager User Experience — Cisco  — 2004-2010
Created the design systems for employee software and services. We won the N/NG 10 Ten Best Intranets award, twice. I used federated governance, content creation templates, design pattern libraries, and an internal open source development model to scale our vision across a 12 million page intranet.

Head of Design — Echo Alley  — 2002-2004
Designed scalable template and component systems using lightweight HTML/CSS for website and application use. My approach enabled companies to create multiple products from a few unique templates and a handful of components, ensuring quick builds, decreased QA and much easier updates.

Director of User Experience — White Horse  — 2000-2002
Created a human-centered design team. I helped Intel and traditional education teams transition to a digital model, creating interactive learning for young students. I created a software design language and development library for General Motors to simplify and streamline their dozens of over-complicated dealer applications.

Manager, Information Architecture + Usability — Razorfish  — 2000
Led the redesign of the biggest e-commerce site in the world. We moved fast, designing and building the web for Fortune 50 clients. At the height of the dot com bubble there was no place like Razorfish. If it was web related, I did it while at Fish.
